Closing Reception + Film Screening | FemmeVOYANT
Curated in partnership with NOVA24 founders Mara Magyarosi-Laytner and Raymar, and The Congregation curator Dr. Chanel Beebe, FemmeVoyant is a month-long celebration of contemporary photography and film works by Detroit’s newest generation of young Black femme creatives.
Starting on Monday, June 8th, our featured exhibition will take place on the first floor and outside walls of The Congregation, where attendees will get the chance to view gorgeous portfolios, photomurals, and film stills from each of our eight presenting artists. There will be opportunities to watch the full films created by our artists at each event, beginning with the Opening Ceremony on Friday, June 12th from 6–8 PM. In addition, there will also be an Artist Talk on Saturday, July 13th from 4–5:30 PM. Attendees will be able to hear the philosophies behind the work of our photographers and filmmakers, as well the struggles and victories they faced in bringing their ideas to life. Finally, we close out the event with a film screening and closing reception on Sunday, July 28th from 2-5 PM.
FemmeVoyant, a follow up to last year’s Detroit Month of Design exhibition The Prelude, was created with the goal of uplifting and highlighting the voices of Black photographers and filmmakers, particularly the voices of young women. In creating this exhibition, we want to take part in the community-wide effort of showcasing talented creatives that have historically been underrepresented amongst all sectors of the art world.

Ways of Seeing @ Someday
Every image embodies a way of seeing. Even a photograph. For photographs are not, as is often assumed, a mechanical record. Every time we look at a photograph, we are aware, however slightly, of the photographer selecting that sight from an infinity of other possible sights. - John Berger, Ways of Seeing
After our panel discussion at PhotoHouse, visit the new exhibition up at Someday Detroit, a visual art and bake house dedicated to bringing everyone to the table through thought-provoking exhibitions and delicious food. Curated by Trotter, the exhibition pulls from NOVA24 photographers and filmmakers to engage the audience in lens based media as a form of artistic expression. As an artist, Trotter creates gorgeous works that invite the viewer (or taster) to emotionally connect with its subjects, with the ultimate goal of, in his words, “venerating the Black Body,” and honoring the ever-evolving legacy of Black life and excellence in America. Both Trotter and his partner/co-founder Jantaé Spinks hope for their collective experiences in commercial, editorial, and fine art spaces to fuel Detroit’s current creative community. Treats from Someday are available for purchase, and we recommend trying some out, you won’t regret it!

Testify | Takeisha Jefferson
“Testify” by Takeisha Jefferson is an exploration of narratives and history through powerful portraiture. This exhibition delves into the ways stories are shaped and reclaimed. Bearing witness to our collective past and its impact on the present, my work serves as a direct commentary on the current efforts to control and reshape the stories of people of color, challenging viewers to confront these issues.
Detroit People Mover x Art-ology
The Detroit People Mover x Art-ology exhibition aims to democratize art, making it accessible to the public rather than confined to exclusive galleries.
This initiative provides emerging BIPOC artists a platform to showcase their work, helping them expand their communities internationally. By promoting art connections within Detroit and Windsor, the event also brings awareness to the People Mover and its role in accessible public transportation.
Art-ology seeks to celebrate the essence of communities through art, capturing unique cultural narratives. This exhibition, featuring artists from both Detroit and Windsor, facilitates cross-border cultural exchange, showcasing the diverse artistic expressions of each city. Hosting the exhibition on the Detroit People Mover engages the public dynamically. It transforms the daily commute into an interactive art experience, fostering a stronger connection between art and the community. By choosing a non-traditional venue, the exhibition challenges conventional art display norms, making art a part of the urban landscape and accessible to a broader audience. The event provides a platform for Detroit and Windsor artists to gain visibility, receive public feedback, and network with professionals, enhancing their opportunities and careers. The exhibition emphasizes ‘BorderCulture,’ highlighting how art can transcend geographical and cultural borders, promoting understanding and collaboration between Detroit and Windsor.
Join us on July 6th from 1-6 pm at the Grand Circus Park Station for an exciting art exhibition featuring 30 artists from Detroit and Windsor. This event showcases the unique border culture, movement, connectivity, and the power of public art. Bring your friends and family to support local and international artists, and enjoy good music and food.
